One morning I wasted nearly an hour watching a tiny ant carry a huge feather. Several times,it __1__ several obstacles in its path. And after a momentary pause it would make the necessary detour. At one point, the ant had to cross a crack about 10 mm wide. After some __2__ thoughts,the ant laid the feather over the crack,walked across it and picked the feather up on the other side,then continued on its way. I was __3__ by the cleverness of this ant. It was only a small insect,lacking __4__ yet ___5____with a brain to reason,explore, discover and overcome. But this ant, like the other two-legged creatures __6__ on the earth, also shares human failings.

After some time the ant finally reached its destination—a flower bed and a small hole that was the entrance to its __7__ home. It was there that the ant met its __8__.How could that large feather possibly fit such a small hole? __9__, it couldn"t. So the ant, after all this __10__ and using great brightness, overcoming problems all along the way, just gave up the feather and went home. The ant had not thought the problem through before it began its journey and in the end the feather was nothing more than a__11__. Isn"t our __12__ like that?

We worry about our families; we worry about the __13__ of money and we worry about all kinds of things. These are all unfavorable heavy weights—the things we pick up along life"s path,and drag them around the obstacles and over the cracks that life will bring, only to __14__ that at the destination they are __15__ and we can"t take them with us.

A

Six years ago, I walked into a local animal shelter on a cold, rainy day. Although my house was already full of cats and dogs, I still couldn’t resist an occasional visit to the shelter. This time as I was walking down the row of pens(畜栏) full of barking dogs I noticed a small boy looking into one of them.

He had a malnourished looking body and a bony face with a big nose sticking out of the middle of it. He was looking at a small, golden dog. Its bony ribs were showing and its thin tail was folded between its legs. It wasn’t begging for attention like the other puppies but was hiding in the corner instead. The boy looked up at me with sad eyes and asked what was wrong with it. “It was probably abused and abandoned”, I said. “That is why it is so scared.”

The boy immediately turned to an older lady and said, “Grandma, I want this one.” The old woman smiled and walked to the front desk to fill out the adoption forms. I followed and asked about the boy. I found out that he’d had a rough start in life too. She had just gotten custody(监护权) of him after the state had taken him from his parents. She had hoped getting a dog would make it easier on him. I looked back at him, holding his scared puppy, and said a prayer for them both.

It was yesterday. I was driving down the road enjoying a gloriously sunny, spring day. Then in a green front yard I saw the boy. His teenage body was tall and strong. His nose no longer seemed big but fit well into his smiling face. He was throwing a ball to a healthy, happy dog with shining golden hair. His little act of love and kindness had indeed gone a long way. It had saved a dog’s life, healed his own heart, and given this middle-aged man fresh hope for us all.

26. The author entered the animal shelter because ____________ .

A. he wanted to buy a dog             B. it was too cold outside

C. he loves dogs and pets            D. he wanted to see the boy

27. The reason why the dog was so scared is that _______ .

A. it had been ill-treated                 B. it was afraid of the cold

C. it was frightened by the boy            D. it was frightened by the author

28 . Why did the boy want to adopt the golden dog?

A. Because the dog looked attractive.   B. Because his grandma also liked the dog.

C.Because the author advised him to adopt it. D.Because they had something in common.

29.The Grandma wanted the boy to adopt a dog so that ___________ .

A. his life could be easier             B. he could play balls with it

C. he could forget about his parents     D. the dog could be taken good care of

30.What can we learn from the last paragraph ?

A. The author is a kind-hearted old man.

B. Both the boy and the dog are growing healthily and happily.

C. The author enjoys watching people playing with dogs.

D. The boy’s nose has become smaller than before.

B

Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.

Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as "bracketing’. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else"s world from the inside, stepping_into_his_or_her_shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way. The energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneselves for mutual growth.

Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don"t want to hear.

It wasn"t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic(有疗效的). In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of the psychotherapy(心理疗法), before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient"s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.

31. The phrase “stepping into his or her shoes” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.

A. preparing a topic list first              B. focusing on one"s own mind

C. directing the talk to the desired results    D. experiencing the speaker"s inside world

32.What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2 ?

A. Benefits of listening.      B. What to listen to.

C. How to listen well.        D. Problems in listening.

33.According to the author, in communication people tend to ________.

A. listen purposefully           B. listen actively

C. set aside their prejudices      D. open up their inner mind

34.According to the author, the patients improved mainly because ________.

A. they were taken good care of     B. they knew they were truly listened to

C. they had partners to talk to  D. they knew the roots of problems

35.What type of writing is the article likely to be?

A. Medical science.  B. A news report.  C. A medical report.  D. Science fiction.

C

Students who date in middle school have significantly worse study skills, are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use than their single classmates, according to new research from the University of Georgia.

'Romantic relationships are a trademark of adolescence ,but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development of these relationships,' said Pamela Orpinas ,study author and professor in the College of Public Health and head of the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior.

Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grade.

Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires about the students* academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.

'At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,"1 according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.

'Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications of dating a co-worker,' Orpinas said, 'when the couple break up. they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and divert  attention from studying.”

“Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school,”Orpinas concluded.

36 . According to the passage, students who date in middle school may_____

A. have poorer academic performances   B. be more likely to hurl others

C. enjoy better school lives         D. are less likely to use alcohol and tobacco

37.When doing his study,  Orpinas_____.

A. followed a group of students of 6th and 12th grade

B. completed a survey and a report each year

C. completed questionnaires about the students’ academic efforts

D. found that the students’ study skills have connection with their frequency of dating

38. Study skills may include the following behaviors and qualities Except_____

40. Orpinas’ tone towards dating in middle school is_____

A. supportive    B. positive   C. negative     D. neutral

D

With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it"s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someone"s face when you know they are feeling down in the dumps (处于沮丧中), as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart.

How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-workers, neighbors, close friends, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don"t know the person I"m joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy(礼貌)to speak to others that are around you.

I know of a few people that don"t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don"t get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?

Laughing is essential to keeping your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to bypass the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.

41. According to the author, humor is useful in the aspect that ____________.

A. it makes people more confident B. it can pick up people’ s spirits

C. it can help get rid of the cruelty in the world  D. it can help people get on well with others

42. The author answers the question in the second paragraph with ___________.

A. facts and descriptions    B. evidence and argument

C. examples and conclusion     D. stories and persuasion

43. The phrase 'busting a gut' in the third paragraph can be replaced by __________.

A. explaining carefully     B. speaking loud    C. keeping silent        D. laughing hard

44. In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to __________.

A .talk about his own understanding of humor

B. encourage people to be humorous in daily life

C. introduce a practical way to get through daily life

D. convince people of the power of being optimistic about life

45.What is the author" s attitude towards the present world?

A. Positive.   B. Critical.   C. Satisfied.      D. Indifferent.

第二节  读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Robert Freddy was general manager of a large hotel in Ashbury Park, New Jersey. One cold day when he stopped his car at a traffic light, Stephen Pearlman, an out-of-work taxi driver, walked up  to earn some change by washing his windshield(挡风玻璃). Like many motorists who try to keep the beggars off, Freddy turned on the wipers to show he wasn’t interested.

Pearlman put his head close to the window. “Come on, mister. Give me a chance. I need a job.” He said. Something in Stephen Pearlman’s voice moved Robert Freddy. He handed Pearlman a business card and told him to call if he was serious.

Two days later, 29-year-old Pearlman appeared in the manager’s office of the big hotel. Freddy gave him a job and housing and lent him pocket money while training him.

Today, Pearlman works full time setting up the hotel’s dining halls for business meetings. In the past two years, he has found a flat, married and repaid Freddy’s loans.

“Mr. Freddy gave me a second chance,” says Pearlman, “And I took advantage of it.”

“It’s the courage and strong belief in his eyes that motivated me to do so. He asked for a chance rather than just money,” Freddy says. “I don’t hand my business card to just anybody. But I’m glad I did in this case.”

基础写作:

Last month a lecture with the theme of sitting for too long is bad for peoples health was delivered by Professor Zhang, a health expert.

With the rapid development of TV(s) and computer(s), many people,especially office workers and students, spend more and more time in sitting, which has a bad effect on their health. Not only can this habit make your neck and back ache, but it may make you fat, increase the risk of heart disease and even death. To prevent these problems from happening, Professor Zhang pointed out that people should form good living habits, such as going to school and work on foot or by bike and standing while talking on the phone. He particularly reminded the students to stand up and take some exercise during break time at school. (或do some activities between classes )

读写任务:

The story is about Pearlmanan unemployed man, who got a job and succeeded in his life. The boss, Freddy, offered him the precious second chance because Pearlman himself never lost courage and hope to life.

Pearlman’s experience makes me realize that sometimes we have to go through hardship and endure poor situations, but as long as we cling to hope and face the difficulties with courage, we may get another chance to make ourselves successful. The first chance may turn out to be a failure, but our strong belief and persistence will definitely help us have another one.

What happened to my cousin brother well proved this is true. He has a gift in painting so he took part in the entrance exams of a top fine art college in Beijing. He got a high mark for his painting work, but he was rejected because of his poor English. He didn’t abandon his target. On the contrary, he spent a year working on English day and night and his efforts finally paid off. A year later, he fulfilled his dream.

As a young student, I have a long way to go, and it can’t be always smooth. However difficult the life will be, I’ll never lose heart. I’m sure if I stick to my dream, I’ll certainly have my own “second chance”.
